Dal Dhokli

I heard about this dish for the first time from my friend Priti Patil.

Ingredients:
  • Daal:
    • Toor Daal/ Arhar Daal: 1 cup
    • Tomato: 3(chopped)
    • Mustard seeds: 1 tbsp
    • Curry Leaves/ Kadi Patta: a few
    • Salt: to taste
    • Ginger: 1 tsp (grated)
    • Tamarind or Imli Pulp: 1/4 cup (or as per your taste)
    • Turmeric pwd: 1 tsp
    • Green Chilli: 1(chopped)
    • Oil: 2-3 tbsp
    • Coriander leaves: a few (chopped)
    • Salted Peanuts: 1 tbsp
  • Dhokli:
    • Gram Flour/ Besan: 1/4 cup
    • Wholemeal Flour: 2 tbsp
    • Salt: to taste
    • Carom seeds/ Ajwain: 1 tsp
    • Oil: 1 tbsp
    • Coriander pwd: 1/2 tsp
    • Red chilli pwd: 1/4 tsp
Method:
  1. Daal:
    • Wash daal properly.
    • In Pressure cooker, heat oil. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
    • Add curry leaves. After a few mins, add ginger, green chilli and tomatoes.
    • Cook till tomatoes are done.
    • Add  daal, water, salt and turmeric pwd.
    •  Take 2-3 whistles and turn off the gas. Add tamarind pulp and peanuts. Mix well.
  2. Dhokli
    • Mix all the above ingredients and prepare dough by mixing with ample water (~1/2 cup). Knead it properly with hands till dough becomes smooth.
    • Take little dough and make a small ball. Dust it with flour.
    • Roll it on the rolling board with rolling pin to form thin chapati.
    • Cut the chapati in square or diamond shaped pieces.
    • Put these pieces one by one in daal.
    • Cook for 10-15 mins. Stir after every 2-3 mins.
  3. Garnish with coriander leaves.
